1.Wet Process: This method involves reacting phosphate rock with sulfuric acid to produce phosphoric acid. The steps are as follows:Phosphate rock is ground into powder firstly.
Then the powdered phosphate rock is mixed with sulfuric acid. The reaction produces phosphoric acid and calcium sulfate (gypsum) as a byproduct.
The phosphoric acid is then separated from the gypsum by filtration or sedimentation.
The resulting phosphoric acid solution may undergo further purification steps.
2.Thermal Process (Dry Process): In this method, phosphoric acid is produced by heating phosphate rock to high temperatures in the presence of coke (carbon) and silica. The process involves the following steps:
Phosphate rock, coke, and silica are mixed together and heated.
The high temperatures cause the phosphate rock to react with coke and silica, forming phosphorus vapor and carbon monoxide gas.
Then the phosphorus vapor is oxidized to form phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5).
The phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5) is dissolved in water to produce phosphoric acid.
Both processes have their advantages and are used depending on factor.
